Good To Wow - Skies The Limit (and adventures with Lightroom)

 Thursday, July 14, 2011

I'm soo excited--I just got Lightroom! I'm still learning how to use it, but already I love it.  I used to just edit in Photoshop but I had seen so many amazing Lightroom edits I've been dying to try it.  I'm also going to finally switch and start shooting in RAW--I'd been sticking with JPEG just because I didn't fully think I could take advantage of all the wonderful things RAW can do without Lightroom. The photos below I still shot in JPEG but I'm really exited to finally start shooting RAW!

Jill and Ashley's "good to wow" theme this week was skies the limit.  I missed the SOOC linkup on Monday, but thats ok because my SOOC's are pretty dismal!!!

Here's a sunset shot from the beach last weekend.

Here's my edit on Lightroom--its not perfect, but its the first thing I've EVER edited on lightroom and I may have gone a little crazy with some of the features. :)

lr edit

I tried the same photo with my usual Photoshop techniques and the results were pretty similar. But the beauty is, I used actions in Photoshop and merely moved a few sliders around in Lightroom. I also like how the lightroom edit kept more detail in the sand and more light on the waves near the shore. It also seems much sharper to me.

There's another sunset shot I used for Scavanger Hunt Sunday last week that I liked. Here was the less than awesome SOOC!  BTW, you can see by the position of the sun, that I took this later than the sunset shot above.  But with the beauty of manual settings, it is much brighter, and has a much different feel.

One of the things that bugged me is when I took this shot there was a sailboat off in the distance that I so wished was in front of the sun. But I knew it wouldn't make it before the sun set! Here was the sailboat, SOOC.

So I basically used the magnetic lasso to highlight the boat and bring it over to my other shot. I believe I also added an extra bird to the shot and fixed some of the light and tones.

And here's it with the SOOC.

Ok now that I see them side by side I see I may not have grabbed the right SOOC! I see now the waves are a little different, but I probably took them about 10 seconds apart!

And finally, for the Crazy Days of Summer photo challenge, I pulled one from the archives.  The theme was "critters" and I just didn't have anything.  So this is an old shot--and one from a point and shoot camera at that, but I like it for the theme.  Its from my trip two years ago to Bali, Indonesia.  And I'm guessing it is some sort of frog!

And just for fun, since I'm doing lots of before and afters, here was the SOOC version.

Congratulations on Light Room! Maybe some day...

I LOVE your edits! Bringing the boat into the shot worked beautifully and is just gorgeous! Beautiful work!

My next goal is to own Lightroom. I hear people rave about it I cannot wait to try it out myself. I love your edits. The boat one turned out specatular.

So jealous you got lightroom! Can't wait to see more. And what a unique frog. I must show my kiddos. They'll love it. Thanks for joining Kristi and I for the Crazy Days of Summer!

Congrats on Lightroom. I love it too, although I know I'm not using it to it's full potential yet. I need a course in it I think!

I have not tried lightroom but I do see the difference in that shot. I like how it enhanced the light on the water.

The different between PS and LR is subtle but definitely noticeable. I love the sailboat shot.

I love the ocean. Very nice! I like the edits. Each one.

Thanks for sharing your editing process and for these beautiful sunset shots. I sometimes merge sunsets into the background of a blown out or boring sky for added interest.

Really beautiful sunset shots!

Oooooh...thanks for posting those comparison edits. LOVE the sunset photos and especially the sailboat one.

So jealous, I want Lightroom so badly!! Congratulations! Great comparisons and that frog is HUGE!!

I've not heard of Lightroom before but you have obviously obtained some brilliant effects - love the sail-boat near the sun - Beautiful!

Sarah July 16, 2011 at 6:04 AM

Gorgeous. I love how you combined the last two. Great edits. I have lightroom but haven't used it too much lately.

Henrietta July 16, 2011 at 11:23 AM

That frog is really ugly critter:) I bought lightroom in May and I love it like you. I couls be there like for hours and I feel like every shot is gorgeous now when I edit with lightroom:) Your sunset edit with the boat is beautiful. Enjoy your lightroom moments!

Dorian Susan July 16, 2011 at 11:27 AM

I really love your lightroom edit. Now I want Lightroom. When will there be money again for these "wants"?
I love the way the light is on the water in that Lightroom edit and was glad to hear I wasn't the only one experimenting in new territory. It's fun, but it takes times. Those sliders are pretty nice.
As for that last frog...wow. I also think you were brave...that might have sent me running away.

Chrissee July 16, 2011 at 12:57 PM

I love Lightroom. I hardly ever open my Photoshop. Great edit!

Great picture of the frog, although it's a weird frog. ;)

Mommy Reg July 16, 2011 at 3:36 PM

Wow! What fun. I love sunsets. :) Thanks for visiting my blog the other day.

Courtney July 16, 2011 at 11:20 PM

Glad to hear you are learning to love LR!! I LOVE it!! I have several videos and posts about it under my editing and Lightroom section. I'm still working on tagging all my LR photos with the LR category!! That sailboat shot is wonderful! What a great way to really add something to your photo!!!

Michelle July 17, 2011 at 1:29 PM

Yay for LR!! I know you'll love it! And yes, isn't it just cool to move a few sliders and be done?? :) Although PS does have it's place like in the 2nd shot you did: WOW! Love how you moved the boat right where it needed to be! Great job!

And sorry, but that is one ugly lookin' critter. :) Just sayin'!
