Dreamy Portraits with Lindsay Crolius

 Tuesday, August 30, 2011

The last time I posted portraits with Lindsay (seen here) we went for a bright and colorful look.  We went out for a second shoot and wanted to do something very different--soft, dreamy, and whimsical. Here's a few of my faves from this session.

1 Portrait, 3 Ways

 Monday, August 29, 2011

When editing pictures I always have trouble deciding how I want to edit it and in the end which version is best.  Usually I go for a simple clean edit, but sometimes I like to try something vintagey (let's just say thats a word) or in black and white.  And when I'm done sometimes I just can't decide which version I like best. And I want all the pictures to look uniform.

Here's a straight out of camera from a session I did with my friend Lindsay the other day.

sooc (1 of 1)

I did my first edit in Lightroom. I boosted the exposure and fill light quite a bit and also the blacks and clarity a touch. That brought me to this. I like the crisp, clean look of this version.

Then I brought the picture into Photoshop and started playing. Something about her flowy white dress and the white flowers and pearls that I felt begged to be given a dreamy, glowy, look to it. I ran 3 different actions all free actions from Isabelle LaFrance Photography.  She has some of my favorite free actions.  The first I ran was called Primrose Glow (one of my faves) from her Morning Garden Glow set of actions.  I used the provided layer mask to remove the "desaturate" and "defog" layer from her face and I lowered the opacity of the whole action to about 30%.  Then I ran Soulful Dusk action from her Soulful Dawn to Dusk action set.  I brought that layer down to about 30% as well and then ran Soulful Easygoing Vintage from her Everyday Vintage set.  I lowered that to about 30% as well.  This was my result. I like the dreamy look to it.

Then, from my color edit, I ran Pioneer Woman's B&W action and adjusted the light and contrast a bit to get this version.

Here are all my versions, what do you think?

In case anyone's curious, the steps I took to get my "dreamy vintage" version, as I like to call it, are the same steps I took to edit this photo that I posted yesterday for my I Heart Faces submission.

I Heart Faces - White

 Sunday, August 28, 2011

The theme this week at I Heart Faces was the use of White in a color photo.  I have tons of pics from this shoot that I'm still going through, but I'm choosing this one for my "White" entry.  I'll share more from this session throughout the week!

Summer Favorites

 Friday, August 26, 2011

Kristi and Alicia have been having a summer photo challenge these last few months and for its last day they challenged to compile a collage of all your favorite summer photos.  I can't believe we are so close to the end of summer already! But here are just some of my favorites.

And I suppose if I had to pick one summer favorite, it would be this one. Click here to see my tutorial on how I edited it.

Good to Wow - Editing Shadows

 Thursday, August 25, 2011

On Monday I posted some shadowy SOOC's and yesterday I posted the full set from this session.  And today I have my edits.  As usual I basically did clean edits, with adjustments, to brightness, fill light, blacks, contrast, clairity, etc.  I brought them into photoshop for some minor clean ups like painstakingly removing strands of hair from her eyes! Here are my "afters."

And some people suggested that I try this last picture in a high key black and white, so here goes.

I like how the color edits made her eyes stand out more, and I really like how the last one came out in black and white!

Chef Lindsay Crolius (and Golden Light Photography)

 Wednesday, August 24, 2011

On Monday I posted a few SOOC's from a mini portrait session with my friend Lindsay. I call it a mini session because we took a few shots at one location and then got in my car to drive to a new location and discovered my battery was dead. By the time Lindsay's boyfriend drove out to us to give me a jump start, we lost all light!

You know I've heard so many warnings about being prepared for shoots by charging all your batteries and making sure you have your memory cards and everything you need, but how do you stop your car battery from dying! Haha. Luckily it was just some pictures for fun and very informal.

I also hear a lot about shooting in the "golden hour" of light, about an hour before sunset.  And while I definitely do like shooting at this time, have you ever found the light TOO golden? Some of these pictures came out completely orange from the golden light.  Luckily, its pretty easy to fix when shooting raw and editing in Lightroom, but it doesn't really help my goal of getting it right straight in the camera.  However, come to think of it, I shot on a auto White Balance mode, and perhaps and custom white balance would've helped... What do YOU do when your golden light is too golden??

I've been wanting to take pics of Lindsay for a while because, well, she is stunning, and she's had some modeling experience which helps me out a great deal. But Lindsay is also a very accomplished Chef and private caterer. She wanted to take some pictures that were fun and bright and colorful and silly and also incorporated food because she's a chef. When I saw she chose to wear a beret I said we just had to get a baguette to go with it. Silliness was high on our list for these pictures! We also got her a basket of tomatoes!

Something I get forgetting when I shoot portraits is close ups of details. Granted I ran out of time early, but I wish I had done close-ups of her hands holding the basket, or close-ups of the tomatoes themselves. Portrait sessions I like are always mixed in with wide shots, close ups, detail shots, and everything in between. I always forget about the detail shots! I'll have to remember that for next time!

And in case you missed the question above, I'm curious to how you overcome the problem of golden light being TOO golden when you shoot? How do you keep the pictures from being too orange? I'd love some tips!
