Tuesday Tips & Pics - Second Attempt at HDR

 Monday, April 2, 2012

Two weeks ago, I posted about my First Attempt at HDR photography.  I wasn't very happy with my results.  I of course shared them anyways, because I like to show my process and track my progress!

I think my main problem with my first attempt was shooting in way too harsh lighting conditions.  I was thinking because I was going to do HDR, and combine many different exposures that it wouldn't matter.  But the results were way too cartoony for me.  Don't get my wrong, I like it when HDR looks a little surreal, but those didn't quite work for me.

I thought I'd have better luck trying it in the evening, and maybe shooting buildings where there would be more contrast between the foreground and the sky.  I shot these right before sunset (minutes before!) in North Hollywood.  I used 5 exposures for each pictures and combined them using Photomatix.

I definitely like these better than my first attempt, and will definitely be trying it again!

NoHo Metro

The first two are of a restaurant/bar I really like and the last is NoHo Metro Station. I think this technique would be fun to do downtown LA!

What have you been shooting?
