Tuesday Tips & Pics - Maternity Preview and a Call for Guest Bloggers!

 Monday, May 7, 2012

First off, at the end of the month I am going to be out of the country for a week! I'm so excited about my trip! I first started this blog after a trip to Paris thinking I'd partly use it as a travel blog (hence the title!) It ended up being a photography blog and the title of my blog makes no sense (I should probably change it one of these days!) But I'm excited to have an awesome travel experience to post about for a while. (If anyone feels like guessing my destination, the initials are M.P....which is a place within the country, not the country itself!)

Anyways, I'd love to feature a guest blogger or two while I'm gone, especially one for Tips & Pics.  It can be anything photography or editing related.  If you're interested shoot me an e-mail or leave me a comment and let me know! I would need the post ready by May 23rd.

Ok, so for this week's Tips & Pics I wanted to show you a pull back shot (SOOC) from a maternity shoot I did a couple weeks ago and talk a little about light.

DSC_0113

At the time of day I shot this, the sun was too bright and harsh for her to face directly.  I needed open shade but the shade was pretty spotty everywhere.  I ended up leaning her up against this post so no sun spots would hit her face (tho you can see them on her arm.)  To keep it from being too dark I used this 5-in-1 Reflector with the gold side out to reflect some nice even warm light onto her face.  Since it's too hard to hold a reflector and shoot, and because I don't have a stand for my reflector, I used these super cheap but awesome Muslin Clips to clip my reflector to my tripod! It worked out very nicely!

Here are two resulting shots from the set-up above.

I was really happy with the resulting light in the shot! Oh and if you're interested, I used my Nikon 35mm f/1.8G Lens for this shot.

Btw, I can't wait to show you the rest from this session, Christy was soo beautiful and so much fun to work with and I love that she wanted to show her beautiful belly for these shots!

Beautiful pregnant photos! I always love to see the pullback. I just got a stand to hold my reflector and was happy to see yours at work! Thanks for all you do, Jaymi!

Gosh, that light on her is just simply gorgeous and so is she. Nothing more beautiful than a pregnant woman. Wonderful!!

This is GORGEOUS! I love your lighting (and the tip about the tripod). Such a lovely subject and beautiful scenery too!

MACHU PICCHU!!! What do I win? :)

great idea about clipping it to your tripod - was it sturdy? I would think the wind would take it away!

I don't mean to provide unsolicited critique, but I think you'd be open to it :) Tell your subjects to relax their hands/fingers (I noticed in your last maternity post also)

I'd love to guest post, but I'm trying to think of a topic??

The reflector makes a world of difference! Absolutely stunning!

Really nice shot and great tip.

I'm thinking a great tip post would be on how to photograph your own kids... a lot of people seem unable to get right down on their level and shoot ...

Going to look at the rest of your blog now! :-)

is it machu picchu?

lovely maternity photos! i wish i had hired someone while i was pregnant for photos like this.

not sure if you got anyone to volunteer for the guest blogger posts, but i would be interested! i'm not a professional, but i could post something other than professional tips... maybe a photoshop tip?

i'm so curious about what t.v. show you work on... i saw that in your profile. how cool!
