Tuesday Tips & Pics - Nicholas' Newborn Preview
Monday, June 18, 2012
I thought I'd take a little break from my many Peru pictures I've been posting to share a little before and after from a newborn session I did this weekend. Remember Christy, from this beach maternity session? Well she gave birth about a week and a half ago to this beautiful baby boy, Nicholas.
It was a bit of a challenging session as little Nicholas did not fall asleep even once for even one second! And if he wasn't swaddled he was squirmy and crying! So the only real option was swaddled and awake shots, but I still ended up with a few I liked.
Here's one example, SOOC: (except SOOC it was a vertical shot, and I rotated it 90 degrees to the left)
I actually thought this looked pretty good SOOC. However I thought the blanket looked a little teal/green, when in actuality it was blue, and his skin looked a little yellow to me too. So in Lightroom, I adjusted the white balance and added a teeny bit of brightness, contrast, and vibrance. I also rotated it just slightly to straighten it a bit more. Then I took the photo into Photoshop and did a slight adjustment to the levels and then I ran CoffeeShop Blog's Baby Powder Room action to sharpen his eyes and smooth his skin. I then used the patch tool to remove the scratch on his chin and a few other spots, sharpened, and was done!
Here's the final:

And here's the side by side...in hindsight, seeing them next each other, I don't really mind the color tones in the SOOC version, but I feel the colors in the "after" are more true to what I saw with my eyes!

love the post process. I have a hardtime with perspective also - it would make your head tilt if you didn't rotate it 90 degrees. But now that you rotated it, it still looks unnatural bc of the surface. I don't know a solution!
I have only had one infant session and he was awake almost the whole time until the very very end where I captured my most favorite shot. I love this picture you captured!
Oh, he's so serious - and SWEET!:)
Cute little feller!
What an adorable newborn! I love the shot and the processing. Both are great, but the after also tones down the yellow skin newborns can have. Love the vibrant blue!
I just love the look on his face! I really like the color better in the after shot.
I completely agree with all your choices here. I think that the SOOC is already near perfect- so those slight adjustments was all it needed to bring it to where you wanted it. What a little cutie. Well done!
Beautiful shot Jaymi! The SOOC is lovely but I agree with editing to give the "this is what I actually saw" look.
What a cutie!
Oh awake newborns are hard! I like the rotation a lot. And those eyes are so dark and pretty! Great shot!
Beautiful baby!
=)
The SOOC is pretty fantastic, but it's great to see what big difference a slight edit can make. You are SO talented girlfriend!
Cute photo. Love your edit.
Excellent goods from you, man. I’ve remember your stuff previous to and you are just extremely wonderful. I actually like what you have acquired here, certainly like what you’re stating and the way by which you say it. You make it enjoyable and you continue to take care of to keep it sensible. I can not wait to learn far more from you. This is really a terrific web site.

OH I love this shot! Yeah your sooc is beautiful; it really didn't need much editing. I love your edit though; nice and clean and simple! Gorgeous!
Wonderful photos, a nice and interesting look.
Love the edit, that is a beautiful baby!
Handsome little guy! I think photographing newborns is always challenging.
Love the tone change and the expression on his face! Too precious :)
Great shot! The tweaks make the photo just perfect.
