Tuesday Tips & Pics - Writing with Sparklers

 Monday, July 9, 2012

We had so much fun on the 4th of July writing with sparklers! To do this, I set my camera on a tripod and set a long exposure - 6 to 8 seconds for most of these.  I closed my aperture down to f/14 to keep the pictures dark-ish with a long exposure, and kept my ISO low to avoid noise.

Sparklers!

After my settings were set and people were in place, you simply had to fire the shutter and let people write in the air with their sparklers. For some of these shots, I turned on my flash for a little fill light but the people are still a little blurry because the exposure was so long.
  Sparklers!

I'd like to experiment with this again with maybe slightly slower shutters and smaller apertures so the background is completely black except for what the flash picks up, and then I could probably get the subjects in focus!

This one is me writing my name! If you are clever enough to write your name in reverse, than do so. If not, simply flip the picture on the computer (like I did!) to get the name forward again.
  Sparklers!

The kids had fun drawing shapes. 6-year-old Oscar in the middle was basically just drawing squiggles but I like to think he was drawing a little spaceship around himself!

Sparklers!

And while the kiddos drew fun shapes the adults did cute little kissy pictures.

Sparklers!

For extra fun, try writing with two sparklers!
  Sparklers!

This was just my first time trying this kinda thing, so I'm eager to try it again. Though I probably won't until next year!

What an adorable idea. For the first year ever, we didn't do sparklers in the back yard. The youngest 2 kids missed it but it gets expensive!

I love linking up with your photo party and I know you must think what on earth is she linking? For me, I don't have a lot of time to go outside and find interesting shots so I'm basically working on how to take better inside shots. I'm still totally on manual! Have a great day!

Hi Jaymi.
Loving your long exposure shots... sparklers are so great to capture a real sense of celebration.
It's funny because my last post (the one that I've linked up tonight) is about shutter speed too! Maybe you would take a moment to have a peep. ;-)
I'd like to link up another tutorial about Tiltshift - I wonder if linky tool will let me - I'll have a go! :-)
Gorgeous blog... I'm a HUGE photogeek so this is right up my street.

I so wanted to try this this year, but I thought my in laws bought sparklers, when they were only punks to light fireworks. Sad. You did a great job, and thanks for telling us how it is done!

Wow, love these pictures...best of all the ones with the three little ones! Gotta try this at home next year. THank you for sharing!

These photos are incredible! I especially like the first two. I have tried so hard to get good sparkler writing shots but I just don't have a good enough camera yet. The best I get are a bunch of squiggles. The "love" one is just amazing!!!! Anyway, I am linked up here for the first time, and I'm a new follower of your blog! Your photos are really stunning. Have a great night :)

These are awesome! I've tried to write words, but I always forget where I started with the letters! Haha It's lots of fun though!

Kelly Smith July 12, 2012 at 6:16 AM

Great photos! Even though 4th of July is past I think I may need to find some sparklers and take some fun photos of the kids trying it out.

Awwww...your sparkler photos turned out great, Jaymi!! They are so much fun for everyone involved.
