Tuesday Tips & Pics - Everything Happens For a Reason...
Monday, August 20, 2012
I don't talk a lot about my job or personal life on this blog, but today I feel the need to. For the past 11 years, I have worked for The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and have absolutely loved every minute of it. You may have read about it in the news, but The Tonight Show had a massive layoff on Friday, and my position was affected and I was laid off. I went through shock, and denial, and anger, sadness, and all the stages of grief you might go through if you had lost a loved one. I lost the only thing I knew, the only job I'd ever had in my adult life. I started working there before I even graduated college.
I was hurt and dismayed and a little numb. But I've been absolutely overwhelmed by the number of people that have called me and emailed me and reach out to me to tell me how sorry they were and how wrong it was what happened to me. And every one of them reminded me that everything happens or a reason and it'll mean better things for me. Well, this happened to me on Friday and I've already had so many people offer to make phone calls for me. I'm nervous and excited. WIll I find something else I like? Will I get a good offer? I'm scared to think about how the decisions I have to make may affect my life and excited about the direction they may take me in.
I've been pretty overwhelmed by this life change all weekend and haven't had any time to spend in the blogosphere but I still have pictures from my recent vacation that I want to share, so today I am sharing a few pictures from Multnomah Falls, Oregon, which we drove through on our way home from Canada. And my tip would be going along with what I was talking about a couple weeks ago and that is shutter speed.
To get the blurred water effect of these pictures, I had to set my ISO as low as possible, and close down my aperture as much as possible. I believe around f/22 and I did 1 second exposures for these shots. Just enough to get a little blur in the water. I used a tripod for these.

Oh and guess what? I'm guest posting over at I Heart Faces today! I can't believe it! Click on over there to check it out!

Sorry for the loss of your job but perhaps even greater things are in store!
And of course lovely photos :)
Beautiful pictures!
I DO believe that everything happen for a reason and hence there will be even better things in the future for you. :-)
Love the pics!
Ugh, so sorry! We have been there twice, and I do believe things happen for a reason. I would most likely not be into photography had we not moved here.
Your water blurred pics are great! This is something I have been wanting to do when I'm at the beach.
So sorry about your job! It is difficult to lose a position after so many years. Thanks for the great water tip. These are beautiful.
I am so sorry to hear about your layoff. I certainly hope you have a wonderful new opportunity come your way and a better path ahead than you could have imagined.
These are wonderful pictures. I have always wanted to try this and certainly feel inspired to try it now!
Re: your ex-job - you have a wonderful attitude which is exactly what will get you to the next possibility.
Re: your tip - I have used this many times (even with my point-and-shoot) and love the effect.
Thanks for the chance to link-up.
Jaymi, I know this is a scary time, but life has a way of moving you along. I had many incidents like this throughout my broadcast career and it always led to bigger and better things that I would not have even dreamed about. Can't wait to hear where life leads you next! Such an adventure!
Forgot to say how incredible those photos are! Maybe you'll do something with your photography!
Beautiful shots! So sorry to hear about your job. Best of luck as you move on to new things.
Thank you for sharing. I know it's hard to have an uncertain future, but when a door closes a window opens somewhere! You are a fabulous photographer, and you will have many opportunities in the future to investigate that further. Have a blessed day!
I heard about this on the news, but had no idea one of my blog friends would be affected by it. I'm so sorry. But I'm a firm believer in the closed door/open window theory. Something good will come from this, I just know it. xo
I am so sorry to hear that Jaymi. Job changes are so stressful because they effect everything else in your life. I am so sad that you have to deal with this right now but that industry really is all who you know & things do happen by phone calls being made. I know you will end up in a great place. I will be excited to hear the updates because I know that the new & exciting door is right around the corner for you.
As for the pic- this is one of my favorite places on earth. I would love to go back with my camera- the last time I was there was when I was 11 or 12 & obviously had a 24 shot film camera. :) It's a magical place isn't it??!
Okay- I just got my emailed post from I Heart Faces today- there you go- all getting mentioned there for your fruit bubbles!!!!! YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So proud of you!
I just want you to know I am so sorry. It happened to me this year too. Not something as cool as Jay Leno, just the same social work job I have had for ten years. I was a mess. A mess. I kept crying. And FREAKING out. And crying. And I am still crying and freaking out now 3 months later. I have a new job, but change is so difficult. I am going to pray for you tonight. Love, Becky
Just found your blog. Im sad this happened to you. Best Wishes
PS> I jumped in to your tips and pics
There will be good coming your way, just be patient and positive. And keep shooting. It can be therapeutic, if you let it. I look forward to seeing more of your images on Sweet Shot Tuesday. :) http://kentweakley.com/blog/

Beautiful! Sorry to hear the news, but with that on your resume, I'm sure there's many more opportunities to be had. Maybe in the photography direction ;)
Losing a part of your life is quite a blow, but, as trite as it sounds, things do happen for a reason....you may find this true as time goes on.....sometimes the reason is not so clear, but eventually it will become so...
Your photos are stunning - I guess China before I read your blurb!
Amazing photos, and I hope something exciting comes along for you job-wise.
It's always hard to get laid off, but it sounds like you have a lot of people in your corner. So milk that network for all it's worth! Good connections almost always pay off in the end.
=)
These are so awesome. I am sooo sorry about your job. That stinks. Will be praying about this new opportunity!
WOW...I can just imagine how you feel. That would be a tough one!! But as I am reading this...another thought came to me...how blessed you are to have had a job for 11 straight years!! And a great one at that!!! I know better things are going to be ahead for you...keep the faith.

Wow I am sorry to hear about our job.... But I will say the very cliche' thing - Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes things happen and they suck - but end up working out for the greater good in the end.
My husband got laid off from his job 3 years ago in sales and I couldn't eat or breathe for a day or two so worried about what we would do... TUrns out he got 4 job offers from other contacts in his industry within a week and he took a better job making more money, and a better work situation. So we chalk it up to it was meant to be. Try to think of it that way if you can -once you get over the shock of it.
p.s. I have been through those falls at the Columbia river and they are just beautiful. I am so happy I went there and got to take some photos, as I live in NJ and may never make it back there.
Oh my, I did just read that info in the newspaper this morning about the layoffs, never suspecting that I would find a fellow blogger that is affected by this news. I am sure it was a complete shock, but as others said, it will lead to something else and your world will look bright again.
So sorry to hear about the loss of your job!!! Hoping this is somehow the beginning of a great new chapter for you. Stinks all the same.
Saw your I heart faces tutorial and can't wait to check it out further. Love theses captures you have here.
Hoping you get some quick blessings of a job just as fulfilling, if not better than the last!
i did hear about the layoffs... didn't realize it would affect you! so sorry to hear that, but i think the advice you've been given is right on. you know the old adage, when one door closes... wising you peace as you make choices in the near future, and a good spirit as you face the shifting ground ahead.
you pictures are beautiful.. cant wait to try this.. i alwyas ended up blowing out my photos-the small aperture suggestion is just what i needed to counter the slow shutter.
Beautiful work!
hello Jaymi! I just joined your awesome photography site! Love love love those water-falls frozen in time by your captures. I also invited Jacqueline and Vivienne to see your site. My sister is Mary [the m in a circle] and she told me about you. see, invites are gold.
join me? i'd love it.
I'm so sorry you were laid off. Been there a couple of times. I'd say to be patient with yourself, take long walks, take the opportunity to step back and look at your life while you're not on the busy work schedule. Feeling the loss with you! You certainly are a talented photographer, by the way. Lovely shots of the waterfalls!
LOVE Multnomah Falls! But not so much the climb to the top haha. Gorgeous photos and great tip to catch a slight blur effect of the water in the middle of the day.
So sorry to hear about your job. Something else will come along!

I saw you over at I Heart Faces. I was so excited to see a face I knew!
I am so sorry about your job. Things have to be a little scary at the moment, but I do know that things happen for a reason and you will be just fine. I will be praying for you (for a new job that is perfect and for peace until it comes).
These are such lovely photos. You are making me want to travel.
So sorry to hear about your layoff! Better things are going to happen for you. Those photos are absolutely amazing! I was just looking at your photos from Salt Spring. We were just out visiting my family on Vancouver Island where we have a family cottage. It's an amazing area isn't it.
So, so sorry to hear about your lay off. Seems that's happening all over the place lately. Keep your chin up... things really do happen for a reason girl!
