Tuesday Tips & Pics - Headshot Preview

 Monday, August 27, 2012

In a lot of ways I think shooting headshot's are a lot easier than shooting regular portrait sessions.  Engagement sessions and maternity sessions and family sessions are largely about capturing the emotions between your subjects, and this can be really tricky when they are so aware of the camera pointing at them.  But headshot's are more about capturing the essence of what a person really looks like.  They should be nice clean edits that clearly focus on the subject.  It's awesome to capture some personality as well, but most casting directors aren't going to look at pictures that are overly edited with haze or vintage actions or that have unique and artistic compositions or back grounds.  Headshot's, are about clearly capturing the faces of your subject.  After all they are called Head Shots for a reason!

I shot a headshot session for these adorable brothers, Brendan and Patrick, who have a casting agent here in LA.  They first went to studio for headshot's and got, what was frankly some pretty cheesy studio shots with some awful 80's backgrounds.  They came to me for some more natural looking headshots. Here's just a couple so far of these cuties.

Oh another tip--long lenses work great for headshots so you can blur the background and make the subject pop and capture some great detail.  I shot these with my Nikon 85mm f/3.5 Macro. I love that this lens is great for macro and for portraits!

Here's Brendan...

And here's Patrick...

They are definitely a bit different from my typical portrait session shots, but I think they still look like my work!

Thanks for hosting each week. I enjoy your pics so much and have enjoyed learning my new camera (and also letting my daughter play around with it). Lightroom is my new best friend! Have a great week!

Jaymi, you did a beautiful job with those cute boys! Love the freckles. It's hard to smooth skin and keep the freckles so natural.

These came out great!! That second little guy reminds me of Ron Howard.

So funny you brought this up though. My girls were invited to submit their pics for a possible magazine shoot in NV & when discussing it with the hubs (who used to work in your industry back before we met) we discussed that I would have to choose the images carefully. They can see the extra stuff we do to our images & it would hurt the girl's chances. Fortunately I love a good clean edit & don't do much extra to anything I do- so I didn't have to shoot just for this. I just had to choose some really natural shots & fingers crossed. I'm still trying to prepare them for the fact that the likelihood of them being chosen together is very slim. If anything it would be one or the other.

What handsome boys! You captured them beautifully! The lighting/exposure is perfect in these shots!

Those are great looking photos. I bet they were a lot happier with them than the others.
I want a macro lens for this very reason, the versatility. I haven't decided between the 85mm 3.5 or the 105mm. Either way I will be saving up for a while. ;)

I love your clean edit on the face and eyes! I would maybe give some "breathing room" around the edges.

These are great. It's so hard to get a natural face from kids. You did it quite well. :-)

Really great photos; kids' expressions can be tough.
It's sometimes difficult to get them to relax and look natural.
You did a wonderful job.

Very cute! I love my 85mm for head shots too. Although my husband always gives me a hard time for not including their entire head in the picture. :-)

These shots look amazing and those boys look really adorable. I also love your tips, especially when you said that headshots and family portraits should be more natural-looking rather than be cheesy and scripted. [aurabackdrops.com]
